The operator must adhere to the signal person or ground personnel while working with a crane for several important reasons.

The signal person is specifically trained to communicate with the crane operator about the positioning of the load, ensuring safety during operations. This involves giving clear signals to guide the operator when lifting, moving, or lowering loads, which is crucial in preventing accidents or equipment damage. Effective communication is essential in a dynamic construction environment where visibility may be limited, and ground personnel often have a better perspective of the surroundings.

Additionally, following the instructions of ground personnel or a signal person is part of adhering to safety protocols and regulations set forth by OSHA and state laws. These personnel are tasked with maintaining safety on the ground and are trained to identify potential hazards and ensure that operations proceed smoothly and safely.

While the operator must also be familiar with the equipment manual and follow directions from the site foreman or safety officer, the immediate and critical communication regarding the operation of the crane during lifting tasks is primarily handled through signals from designated ground personnel. This emphasizes the collaborative nature of crane operation, where accurate and timely communication is vital to ensuring everyone's safety on site.
